On September 19, 2018, a good friend/neighbor of mine was driving down a road that he, my wife, and I all traverse every day when a single engine plane owned by the Drug Enforcement Agency !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and hit his Model X that he and his young son were in. Cue the ensuing absurdity of the auto insurance industry.

The good news: my friend (we’ll call him “O”; his name was made public long ago, but I prefer not to drop it for a blog post) and his son !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . The bad news: six months later, the DEA nor the federal government has yet to pony up any money to reimburse O for the damage to his $120,000 SUV. Not only that, but O’s insurance premiums have gone up because, according to his insurance provider, he was HIT BY AN UNINSURED MOTORIST. Now mind you, the “uninsured motorist” was a pilot in a propeller plane owned by the Federal Government, and he was hit on a public roadway that planes are generally not found landing on, but rules are rules. Right? RIGHT?!

When O told me this a couple of days ago, he told me that he has indeed retained an attorney and is trying to recoup the money he’s spent because he was the victim of a damned plane falling out of the sky onto his car. He also gave me permission to write this, considering his pending litigation, was a must for me to obtain. Just imagine: you’re driving along, minding your own damned business, when a Cessna falls out of the sky, totals your car, and then the federal government employee/pilot gets out and tells you that you’re S.O.L. and on your own for damages. Honestly, just close your eyes and imagine the absolute rage that you’d experience.

For now, O is in good spirits, since everyone survived the crash (the important part) and he and his son made it out of the ordeal without a scratch. Now, he just needs to get his insurance premiums down to what they were prior to being hit by the uninsured federal aircraft.

I wouldn’t wish getting hit by a Federal vehicle on anyone.  Both in Canada and the USA.  Worst claims ever, they generally don’t give a shit.

Government agencies must carry umbrella policies, his insurance company should be able to recoup their losses via that avenue and not raise his rates .

The part that’s the most surprising to me is how his insurance company is treating this like getting hit by an old Chevy driven by some asshole that let his liability policy lapse.

I, for one, find it preposterous that an upstanding organization, such as the DEA, would fail to carry insurance or reimburse citizens when they wreck their stuff. /s

yeah that is kinda shitty, but at the same time, what else can they do?

I’ve had claims with the Army & RCMP here. If they damage your shit or you damage their shit (or people) , you are in for a bad time.

Rates have already been raised, government agency is telling him to buzz off.

O told me a story relayed to him by his attorney about the Boston Bomber. Tamerlan Tsarnaev was gunned down in some random person’s boat that happened to be in their driveway, at their house. The FBI confiscated said boat for evidence. The FBI now refuses to give it back, nor will they reimburse the owners for the loss of their property. That was six years ago.

O doesn’t see his case being settled any time soon.

Excuse me, but are you trying to infer that the Federal Government of these United States does not always do what’s right and just in a timely manner?!   Pish posh.

T his is al l sorts of fucked up!

I hope the lawyer can find this umbrella insurance office and take them for the cost of the car, and then some.

Wait, YOUR insurance premiums go up if you are hit by an uninsured motorist?

Is that true? In Canada the Federal government does not carry insurance. Perhaps some government programs/offshoots do, but if you get hit by like a military vehicle or RCMP vehicle, you’re stuck dealing with some pud in Ottawa forever.

I don’t think they should raise the rates on somebody who was not at fault, whether the party that hit them was insured or not.  If my truck gets totaled by some idiot with no insurance, I am not a higher risk driver all of the sudden.

I’d be surprised if the government carries insurance. They are so large that even if they were good about making people whole, it seems like they’d be way better off self-insuring.

Fuck that shit. Fuck the lawmakers who undoubtedly took money from insurance lobbyists and fuck soulless corporations  stealing from their customers .

My use of “must” was incredulous - as in, they must do that, right? LOL. I don’t know if they do at a federal level, but they definitely do at a local level. Friend had his BRZ get totaled by the local police department, and their insurance paid up.

I expect so much better out of both the federal government and insurance cabal, organizations based on responsibility, accountability, self-awareness, good customer service, and a lack of corruption and poor ethics.

I was going to say that you do drive in an area with uninsured motorists, but your earlier rates should have reflected this fact from the start.

I’d go park a beater in front of their new plane.

You’re not allowed to play with your new toy un til  you clean up your mess.

That’s the most rediculous part to me. It wasn’t a car that hit him at all. This should be treated the same as hitting an elk. The sad thing is if it was some old beater they probably would’ve done it that way but they took too big of a hit with it being an expensive new car so they are playing a stupid game.  I know it won’t help the rates but I’d move on from that’s insurance company.

My sister in law is about 4 months in to her fight against the government, she was t-boned by someone that ran a stop sign and it totaled her vehicle. She mistakenly though government=fast, good for getting it resolved.

The answer here is to sue the DEA fir damages plus, at the same time put a lien on a DEA Ferrari then repo the Ferrari when they don’t pay up.
